Dennis, an Ohio Dachshund has just become the biggest canine loser after shedding a whopping 75% of his body weight.
Dennis went on a diet and shed around 75% of his body weight in two years. The Ohio Dachshund started his weight loss journey two years ago when he weight a whopping 56 pounds and now is just a shadow of his former self.
When he used to weigh 56 pounds, the Ohio Dachshund weighed about the size of four small dachshunds. Looking at the before and after pictures, one could see the major improvement and Dennis has undergone.
The fat Dennis was so overweight that when he rested, he was actually sitting on his fat rolls. The dog couldn’t even walk without being out of breath after only a few steps.
The dog got lucky when he was adopted by Brooke Burton from its former owner who admitted to feeding him pizza, White Castle burgers and other human food and didn’t much care about the dog’s weight.
Brooke Burton, 26, is a nursing student and was deeply impressed by Dennis. She recalls how emotional she got when she first saw the dog in 2013. She went to great lengths to convince the former owner of the dog, a relative of hers to give him to her.
Burton remembers how shocked she was when Dennis appeared in front of her eyes. She said that she couldn’t even make out the type of breed he was because of his sheer size.
Dennis’ new owner put him on a diet of dry dog food, lots of affection and walks. It worked, because the 6-year-old Ohio Dachshund now weighs 12 pounds and is very active. He loves chasing squirrels, playing fetch and being the Alpha dog of the house.
Dennis lost so much weight that his sagging skin became a problem that prevented him from walking. In order to get rid of the extra skin, the dog has had three surgeries at the Ohio State University Veterinary Medical Center.
Doctor Kathleen Ham, the surgeon who performed Dennis’ surgeries said that his story is a good lesson who feed their pets too much. She concluded that:
We have an expression: food is not love. Most of what your pet wants from you is affection and attention.
