For the first time in the history of the franchise, Resident Evil: Umbrella Corps introduces competitive gaming for players that will take it away from the survival horror installments it has been known to release. This could be good, or incredibly bad, but the launch trailer does hold some promise.
Capcom is celebrating their 20th anniversary with an announcement of their next multiplayer first-shooter game that will focus on competitive play. It will place teams of human players against each other, to battle it out on maps and arenas infested with aggressive zombies, that could be your biggest hindrance or your greatest allies.
Announced at Tokyo Games Show 2015, Umbrella Corps will take fans of the highly successful franchise even further from its roots, by expanding in a new area that may be catering to the taste of eSports lovers. This could potentially bring them one step closer to professional competitive gaming, though it remains to be seen if it will capture the attention of millions.
The Umbrella Corporation is the infamous villain of the Resident Evil series, the ruthless pharmaceutical company, whose experimentation and biologic weapons have led the world to destruction. Zombies run amok and the planet as we know it had undergone a biologic apocalypse for the players to venture through and survive along the storyline.
Unlike other games of the famous franchise, Umbrella Corps will be focusing on specialized units of the villainous company instead of protagonists aiming to tear it down. They will be assembling teams of players and shoot it out against each other around historical landmarks of the fictional world, such as Raccoon City.
According to Capcom, “it will feature quick, intense matches in compact battle zones” around areas that will be familiar to fans of the series. Players will have an arsenal of weapons at their disposal, including a pretty nicely presented hook-blade for close combats to both maneuver around the map, or tackle zombies and opponents.
The multiplayer game appears to be team based, with players needing to take out the opposing team with the added twist of no respawn. Once you’ve died at the hands of a zombie or the blade and bullets of your enemy, you’re officially out until the end of the match.
It could provide for interesting competitive gameplay, though producer Masachika Kawata was not very generous with the details of the in-game stats such as life, damage, speed, and many others vital for first-shooter games.
No release date has been given either, but the game is expected to be launched in 2016 for PlayStation 4 and PC.
