If you have a hard time getting out of bed, then here’s the alarm clock that slaps the sleep right out of you and guarantees you won’t be comfortably resting anymore.
- The Wake-Up Machine, was made by 25-year-old YouTuber, Simone Giertz
- She provided instructions on how to make it, using an alarm clock and a rubber hand
- Once the alarm goes off, the motors start spinning the hand
For some people, getting out of bed is one of the most difficult parts of their day. The snooze button gets abused, and those extra 10 more minutes turn into at least 30 after three presses. It gets to a point where they might as well set the alarm to go off half an hour later. However, for those still living in denial that they will no longer use the snooze, YouTuber and robotics tinkerer, Simone Giertz, has an interesting solution.
The premise was simple: waking up in the morning sucks. So, according to Giertz, why shouldn’t there be a machine that makes your bed a lot less comfortable by having something that just slaps you awake? That’ll certainly do the trick.
The YouTube created the device, dubbed the Wake-Up Machine, with the help of a traditional alarm clock and an Arduino UNO microcontroller. She made the connections so that once the alarm goes off, it would send signals to a motor, which will send a rubber hand to slap you over and over again.
That is, until you get up and hit the stop button, or you know… yank the arm off in anger.
Giertz stated that she first got the rubber hand for Halloween, and then decided to put it to use with an alarm. She wiped off the fake blood (which might’ve been an even more uncomfortable addition), and then went to work. The YouTuber was helpful, providing her viewers instructions on how to make it.
According to her though, the contraption is “probably more humiliating than painful”, considering the continual slaps that just keep on coming. The material of the actual hand is relatively soft. This means that it’s likely to become far more annoying than causing serious injuries. But still, it’s up to anyone in case they wish to be smacked awake.
For some, childhood memories of parents yanking off the covers and exposing us to the cold is enough. However, this could be a guarantee that you get off the bed. Facing the freezing tiles of the bathroom floor in the winter might be better than getting pummeled by an inanimate object. To each their own though.
