It’s been a highly anticipated feature, but all Xbox One controllers now have remappable buttons and may be customized to the user’s desire.
- Microsoft rolled out the update as part of their New Xbox One Experience
- Standard Xbox One controllers have remappable buttons
- Gamers will have only one preset layout
- Unlike the Elite controllers, all buttons are required to play a role
For a long time, Xbox One users have been asking Microsoft to implement the feature that will allow them to customize the functions of their controller buttons. It’s considered one of the most basic capabilities that all should have. However, until now, most gamers were stuck with the preset layout given by each game in part.
Back in October, Microsoft released the Xbox One Elite controller, with full options of customizing buttons and triggers. However, that required gamers to cough up around $150, which was not the sum everyone would be willing to play. Yet among the numerous other features, the fancy Elite controller allowed button remapping.
Finally though, the standard Xbox One controllers will be receiving the same ability. Players can go in, and start attributing functions to their buttons as they please. It will work for all wireless and wired versions, and should be soon rolling out for everyone. However, if it does not, players could simply access the update through the Xbox Accessory app, or by going to the Updates tab in the console’s main settings.
There is a bit of a catch though, that still makes the Elite controller a bit more tempting in terms of flexibility.
When replacing a button or trigger on the standard Xbox One controller, the functions will automatically be swapped. Whether you want it or not, all will have an attributed role. Essentially, not button will be left without a function. This is something available for the fancier and more expensive Elite.
Furthermore, the standard Xbox One controller with the update will also not allow for multiple presets. It will have just one saved slot, unlike the Elite, which provides gamers with multiple customized layouts. It’s of great help when switching between two different types of games. For now, just the one customization will be available for the standard controller.
And it will not save from one console to another. If gamers wish to take their controller to a friend’s Xbox One, they will have to remap their buttons all over again. Regardless, it’s still a step forward. Microsoft seems to have listened to their fans, yet also kept their newly launched Elite controllers with an advantage. It’s only natural.
