Another national celebration is around the corner, and astronauts couldn’t miss it for the world. Even though their Thanksgiving meal may not be as copious as the traditional American feast for the occasion, that doesn’t mean the space travelers aren’t as grateful up there on the International Space Station.

- The zero-gravity feast was previewed in the video, including space turkey, yams, corn and potatoes
The American astronauts will celebrate the holiday with their Russian colleagues, even though they don’t have the day off as the Americans do. As part of their regular updates sent on Earth, Kjell Lindgren and Scott Kelly shot a video on Monday with their Thanksgiving greetings.
The two astronauts took turns to thank the ground team – the thousands of people who make it possible for them to be “working and living in this amazing orbiting laboratory, a physical manifestation of what is possible when the great countries of the world work together,” Kjell Lindgren said.
Scott Kelly added they have gained a new “perspective on what it means to be a citizen of Planet Earth” since they’ve started their one-year experiment in space, one that seeks to understand the changes that take place in the human body after living for so long in microgravity. Back in March, NASA had launched Kelly to the ISS in the Baikonur Cosmodrome alongside two Russians.
In the same video, the American astronauts shared a preview of their Thanksgiving dinner, which includes “smoked turkey, candied yams, rehydrated corn and potatoes au gratin.” This has been consistently the special microgravity feast the astronauts have enjoyed on each Thanksgiving they were caught aboard the International Space Station.
Breaking bread – figuratively speaking, because microgravity and crumbs don’t get along that well – with the Russians is another space tradition that goes back in time, according to reports of the Associated Press.
NASA featured one of these occasions in 2003, when NASA ISS Science Officer Peggy Whitson and her fellow astronauts were joined by the Russian cosmonauts for their Thanksgiving meal. Back then, the menu included a special treat, compliments of the Russian: blueberry-cherry cobbler served on a tortilla.
At the end of the video, Kelly and Lindgen talked about their Thanksgiving plans: some afternoon football on their day off followed by a space food turkey meal. The message ended with two zero-g flips performed for the delight of the viewers.
