There are many things we are trying to learn about humanity’s past but the findings are often contradicting, for example the trans-Atlantic migration did not happen in the Ice Age.
- Oetzi the iceman had no interest in crossing the Atlantic
- Siberians might have been to Alaska
- Crossing an ocean when you don’t know if there’s something on the other side doesn’t go into the survival kit of the iceman.
After Oetzi the iceman was discovered over 20 years ago, several studies have been done and it turned out that he lived in the Copper Age in the Italian Alps. Scientists have discovered many things about the mummy such as the fact that he had brown eyes and was lactose intolerant.
According to researchers the genetic structure of Oetzi’s father is still among us nowadays. However, the mother’s genetic structure has disappeared in time. Also, it seems that the parents came from different regions and met in the Alps.
Therefore, we can find many details about what people looked like back in the Ice Age and how they behaved. Many of them were migrating in search for food and warmer temperatures and it was believed that some might have managed to cross the Atlantic and rich the American continent.
This hypothesis refers mostly to migration of ancient Europeans or Israelites, but most archeologists believe it to be false as they could not find evidence to support this hypothesis. Genetically speaking, Native Americans have nothing in common with Europeans.
It is more likely that the first population to have migrated there was formed by people of Siberia. Back then Siberia and Alaska were linked by Beringia, a territory which no longer exists. However, it would have been a lot easier to go from one continent to another through Beringia than doing it by crossing the Atlantic.
Besides, where the people in that period so certain they would find something on the other side? Since survival was the most important, it is only natural they kept to the territories that they knew and knew they exist, instead of going after something they could only imagine.
All in all, we can find many remarkable things about people living before our era, but we also need to be careful when making suppositions as they may turn out to be completely wrong. For now, let’s hope we are still able to find out more about Oetzi and his parents, where they come from and why they went into the Alps.
