A dog shelter in Ohio was closed after it has euthanized 52 dogs. Unfortunately, all those animals suffered from distemper, a deadly disease. People were not able to save them and the dog shelter owners decided it would be too hard the dogs to be kept like this. The animals had signs of respiratory disease and emotional issues.
- Dog shelter decided to euthanize 52 dogs after it was discovered they suffered from distemper.
- The adoption center is now opened again, but there will be no adoption in the near future. They want to see how the other dogs feel because not all of the animals from there were euthanized.
Of course, there were some people who do not agree with the decision. They gather outside the shelter on Sunday night, saying that the decision was unfair. The protestors though that other options should be considered before killing some innocent animals.
However, the manager of the dog shelter has another opinion. He said that he evaluated the risks with experts from Ohio State’s veterinary college and the Capital Area Humane Society. They agreed that the dogs will not survive, so it would be better for them to be euthanized. There were also low-risk animals, who are still alive and will be given from adoption in the future.
Canine distemper is a contagious virus that attacks the respiratory and nervous system at dogs. According to the authorities, there is no cure for the disease. Even the dogs who manage to survive it, have nervous system damage and they will never be the same.
For some people, the decision was hard. There were 52 dogs involved and their future was decided by humans. However, we have to say that it would have been harder for the animals to be alive like that. There is no creature that enjoys pain and there was just a matter of time before they would have died. The dog shelter’s officials think they made the right choice, even though it was difficult for them.
The adoption center is opened now and people who lost their dogs can come there. However, those who want to adopt will have to wait because they want to be sure that there is no problem. The dog shelter promised to pay more attention to the animals and prevent this kind of events from happening, in the future.
