Researchers have recently unveiled the existence of an underwater lake situated at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico known as the ‘Jacuzzi of Despair.’ This lake which is thought to be unable to sustain any form of life proved to be five times saltier than the waters of the Gulf. Every sea animal which ventures to reach it will be killed by its unbearable waters.
- A very salty pool was discovered in the depths of the Gulf of Mexico.
- Scientists argued that its composition is made out toxic chemicals.
This massive, salty source of water was first discovered back in 2014. The “dead pool” three thousand feet below the gulf’s surface, measuring approximately a hundred feet in circumference. Considering the fact that the salty lake lies at the bottom of the sea, it has acquired its particular composition made out of chemicals like hydrogen sulfide and methane gas.
These substances determined the pool to be incapable of sustaining life. In March 2016, a team of researchers from NOAA have dared to explore the depths of the Gulf of Mexico. They have used Exploration Vessel Nautilus unveiling the inhospitable ‘Jacuzzi of Despair’ located underwater. The extremely salty waters and warm temperatures which measure 19 C degree determined it to be fatal for any creature.
Along the edge of this pool, scientists revealed a lot of dead crabs and isopods which probably fell in this salty water. The crater-like pool has risen approximately three meters above the seafloor. On one side of the ‘Jacuzzi of Despair,’ salty water was spilling in a deadly waterfall, containing a lot of dangerous chemical substances.
The aim of this journey was to develop a map in high resolution useful for anybody who reaches this place. A detailed map of the seafloor is significant to understand the structure and the features of that particular environment. Scientists confirmed that the salty circular pool was saturated with methane gas. Two specific locations were unveiled where bubbles of methane were reaching the surface.
Many teams of researchers have got to this place to analyze the composition of the water and the damages that it could create. Scientists want to determine more details about the biogeochemical and physical processes that take place in that dangerous pool. If that information is provided, experts will be able to estimate the amount of microbial processes occurring there.
