Studies have shown that beauty products specially designed for African-American women contain even more chemicals than any other type of make-up kits. Recent research has proved that 1 out of 12 beauty products designated for African-American women contains unsafe ingredients that could damage the skin. The study was published on December 6th by the Environmental Working Group.
- Recent studies have shown that beauty products tailored for African-American women contain more chemicals.
- After seeing the statistics, women became skeptical when using certain care products.
This corporation has tested and compared the outcomes of over 1,100 products meant to help women preserve personal care. These products marketed to African-American women were discovered to obtain low scores when their ingredients were analyzed.
The new report has proved that the cosmetics which were less reliable were hair colors, bleaching products and hair relaxers which were linked to high risks of potential health damage. The ingredients found in the composition of these cosmetics were presenting risks of hormone disruption, cancer, reproductive damages, allergies and developmental damages.
Nneka Leiba, the deputy director of research at the Environmental Working Group, has asserted that if a black woman decided to use one of the marketed care products designated to their demographic, they seem to remain with fewer healthier options. Leiba has also stated that hair dyes contain formaldehyde releasers. Formaldehyde is a well-known agent which causes cancer, and it is present all over the beauty market, in thousands of products. Very few products dedicated to African-American women do not contain this dangerous ingredient.
The analysis developed by this non-profit research organization is the first one meant to test products designed to this particular demographic for their dangers and risks to consumer health. The ratings of these products were added to the database of the Skin Deep group. Their database is a searchable one offering information about the potential harms which can be caused by the use of over 64,000 personal care products.
Their primary purpose was to provide people more data to help them choose carefully all the products they are using. The report revealed that African-American women represent 22% of the market for beauty products. Unfortunately, until now, data about the harms deriving from the purchased products were not revealed.
Paul Pestano, the senior database analyst and co-author of the study argued that the association has received a lot of emails contain several questions which regarded particular brands or type of personal care products which targeted black women.
