NASA scientists argued that a surprise asteroid like the one which determined the extinction of dinosaurs may destroy the world someday in the future. New research conducted by scientists from NASA is trying to warn us about an imminent disaster. A possible asteroid strike of adequate size could cause the end of the world because our planet is not ready to defend against such a terrible occurrence.
- A surprise asteroid might hit our planet and cause total destruction.
- This imminent danger is difficult to be predicted.
- Scientists argue that we are not prepared for such a catastrophe.
Dr. Joseph Nuth, a scientist for NASA who is responsible for researching for the Goddard Space Flight Center, argued that humanity has no means to prepare against such a catastrophe. There is nowhere to go, no possible spaceship big enough to embark all humans and fly us away. What is even worse, there is no method which will help scientists determine a potential hit in time.
Even if it was, we could not hide. Dr. Nuth stated during a conference with nuclear scientists that our planet will be defenseless in front of an asteroid big enough to destroy it. A possible collision could end up everything in a blink of an eye without us even having a chance to get out this alive. During the meeting of the American Geophysical Union in San Francisco, Nuth noted that Earth had already escaped an extinction-level “close encounter” back in 1996 when Shoemaker-Levy comet almost hit the planet.
Luckily, Earth survived due to Jupiter which acted like a gravitational slingshot which captured the celestial object and destroyed it. Based on data provided by CBS News, Jupiter might have saved us from a similar disaster this year, too. Another threatening celestial object had passed right near Mars. It seems that it was predicted to pass near the Red Planet right just 22 months before the event.
What is more, Nuth pointed out that Terra is due a “dinosaur killer” surprise asteroid impact. The lack of preparedness could cause our planet’s destruction. If we were to trust the latest technology, we’ll see that we couldn’t. To launch a spacecraft it takes about five years to prepare it. Considering the extreme danger that passed right by us, we only had 22 months to prepare.
To protect Terra, Nuth has claimed that NASA could construct a rocket used for intercepting which be prepared and launched within a year’s notice to be efficient. This spaceship might prove to be helpful to reduce the possibility of a significant impact.
