Ford Motor Co. announced a partnership with Domino’s Pizza Inc. The team seems an unusual pair yet they managed to create a wonderful project. As of September, they will start testing autonomous deliveries. This means that the hot pizza Domino customers order will arrive in a self-driving vehicle. Teams behind this collaboration will start gathering feedback from served customers.
Ford Intends to Partner up with as Many Businesses as Possible to Put Its Fleet of Self-Driving Cars to Work
On Tuesday, Domino’s Pizza Inc. will take one step deeper into advanced pizza delivery system next to Ford Motor Co. However, this is not the first pioneering adventure of its kind. Domino in Australia has previously tested customer deliveries to one of its largest independent franchises in Ann Arbor. With this occasion, they used flying drones and self-driving robots to bring hot pizzas to doors.
The head of Ford’s autonomous department, Sherif Marakby, announced last week in a blog post a new mission of his company. The automaker adopted broader plans within this young auto niche. This time, Ford intends to partner up with as many businesses as possible. Through these collaborations, the company will introduce fleets of self-driving vehicles that were specially created to innovate movement.
Autonomous Deliveries Cannot Provide Door-to-Door Service Right Now
Therefore, Ann Arbor pizza lovers are in for a big surprise this September. Domino will select some of its clients randomly. The lucky ones will receive their favorite dish through autonomous deliveries.
The participating fleet of Ford Fusion Hybrid will make the deliveries with humans on board as more of passive drivers. However, after a while human assistance will disappear and in exchange will remain the sheer self-driving technology.
What customers will experience on their end is a new type of delivery support. They will be able to track the delivery vehicle through GPS. Once their order is near, they will receive instructions on how to pick up their hot pizza.
However, the innovative system has already received some criticism. In the end, self-driving technology might not prove to be that efficient within the delivery market. There are some serious loopholes in the strategy. For instance, it is unclear how Domino will bring pizza to a college dorm on the fifth floor.
