Indian Woman Denied U.K. Visa for Having Flawless English

December 19, 2017 by Jakob Nielsen Leave a Comment

U.K.flag on a poleA 22-year old woman from India was refused entry to the U.K. for having flawless English. Alexandria Rintoul, who wanted a Scottish visa to join her husband in their new home, saw her application rejected because she submitted an English test that was of a higher level than the required one.

  • This means that she won’t be able to spend her first Christmas with her husband in the U.K. before the birth of their first baby in 2018.
  • Her husband said that he planned a new life together with his wife in Scotland.
  • The couple has even bought a house in the country. The man unveiled that living in Scotland was Mrs. Rintoul’s dream but that was taken away over a “trivial” issue.

The couple said that their friends had advised them to get a lawyer before applying for the visa since the procedures are very complicated. However, the lawyer advised her to take the International English Language Testing System test which revealed she had a native-like language level.

Woman’s English Pass Was Too Advanced

The Home Office, on the other hand, requires only a ILETS exam for immigrants which is less advanced than that of the woman.

Her lawyer underlined that, ironically, the woman had passed a test that would grant her entry to Cambridge or Oxford University, but couldn’t get her a visa for being too proficient. The UK Visa and Immigration service, however, would accept only immigrants that can pass a test that enables them to be dishwashers in one of the country’s numerous kebab shops.

And the rejection comes at a hefty price: £2,000 for every application. They were advised to reapply and bring a ILETS pass this time. What’s more, the test needs to be taken at one of the testing centers specified by immigration officials.
