There are some experts that believe that the reports about the magnetic field reversal which could affect every form of life on the planet are greatly exaggerated. Last week, multiple reports showed that the Earth’s magnetic poles are in the process of swapping places.
However, such reversals usually take thousands of years and it is not the first time one has occurred. Recent reports, on the other hand, have presented the natural changes as a doomsday scenario that could threaten the life on Earth as we know it.
- Experts explained that in the planet’s history the North and South poles have changed positions on the global map multiple times since the planet’s creation.
- Also, thousands of years ago, the poles were about to flip once more but they stuck to their position, evidence suggests.
However, last week’s reports suggested that a magnetic field reversal could render some parts of the planet’s uninhabitable as the radiation that gets blocked by the ozone layer would become unbearable for most species.
Magnetic Field Reversal Would Take Thousands of Years
Even though the publications that covered the reversal underlined that the poles may need at least 1,000 years to flip positions, the sensationalized reports made many people believe that the reversal’s consequences could occur during their lifetimes.
Multiple experts insist that a magnetic field flip is not a dangerous thing for the life on Earth. It could indeed impact the electrical infrastructure, but it won’t lead to the extinction of certain species or massive die-offs.
One of the experts that recommend keeping our calm is Prof. Robert Wicks from the University College London in the U.K. He explained that a magnetic reversal could indeed impact GPS systems and affect satellites, but the changes will take so much time that the humanity will be able to adapt. Prof. Wick insisted that we “may not see any change in our lifetime.”
