Here’s How Putin Got Russian Voters to the Polls

March 20, 2018 by Jakob Nielsen Leave a Comment

Russian campaign adOn Sunday, Vladimir Putin secured his fourth term as the President of Russia, becoming the second modern Russian leader with more than two decades in office after Joseph Stalin.

However, his landslide victory was mainly based on getting more Russian voters to the polls, which happened. More than 65% of Russian voters cast their ballot on Mar. 18, with many saying that Putin was the only real option.

  • The Putin campaign poured millions of dollars in getting people to the polls.
  • Strategies to achieve the goal were text messages, social media presence, billboards, and YouTube videos and ads.

One of the YouTube campaign videos pushed for Putin in a subtler way, imagining a dystopian future with the current Russian president being replaced by a dictator because voters simply stayed home.

The video features a middle-class Russian family, with the husband being a 52-year-old man who refuses to show up at the polls on Sunday a day before election. That night he has a nightmare about a future shaped by absurd laws.

The Video

In the dream, he wakes up with an army official at his door, announcing him that he had been drafted into the army. The man objects, saying he is too old for the army, but he is promptly informed that the draft age had been raised to 60.

The man shuts the door in the officer’s face and heads to the kitchen to tell his wife the news. In the kitchen, he sees a scantily clad young man sitting at the family’s table. His wife explains that the new President passed a law that gives each home a “gay homestay.”

The gay visitor can stay for a week, but if he fails to find a pair, the husband “will have to be with him,” according to the wife. “The law is the law,” the gay man adds before biting into a banana.

The promo ends with the man rushing to the poll the next day. You can watch the full clip here:
