More than a decade, the Israeli government kept a successful military operation to blow up Syria’s nuclear reactor under wraps. The operation, with the code name “The Cube,” was discovered during an investigation by Israeli newspaper Haaretz.
The investigation shows that the reactor, aka The Cube, was destroyed shortly after it was inaugurated. The Israeli air force, spy agencies, and army were all complicit in the covert mission.
Top intelligence described the mission as a big “failure” which could be the worst intelligence flop since the Yom Kippur War. The Israeli intelligence community mysteriously failed to realize that Syria was building a reactor in great secrecy and tried to cover it up by bombing it.

- The operation happened under Prime Minister Ehud Olmert’s watch, who approved of a war in Lebanon which did not benefit Israel at all.
Two years later Olmert had to step down before going to jail after being convicted on corruption charges.
25 Israeli Officials Confirm Bombing of Syria’s Nuclear Reactor
Haaretz reported that they got access to the files documenting the 2007 mission with the approval the country’s military censor. However, the Israeli military gave the media access to the story “with restrictions”.
During the investigation Haaretz talked with 25 Israeli and U.S. officials who had ties to the operation or the events associated to it. One of the leaders of the operation who had a last say in the decision is late Meir Dagan, who served as the head of the nation’s top spy agency Mossad at the time.
One of the sources said people involved in the secret military mission to blast the Syrian reactor “deserve credit” and demand it. Sources also confirmed that without Olmert, Dagan, and Air Force commander Eliezer Shkedi the mission would not have happened.
