Much has been said throughout human history about the price of looking beautiful, but doctors now say that certain fashionable items are seriously endangering your health. Skinny jeans in particular are causing women to collapse, or at the very least suffer muscle and nerve damage.
In a report published earlier this week, on Tuesday (June 23, 2015), in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry, Doctors from the Royal Adelaide Hospital describe the case of a 35-year-old Australian woman who had to be hospitalized for no less than four (4) days after suffering swelling, muscle damage and nerve blockage in her lower legs.
The problem was not that she was simply wearing skinny jeans, but that she wore them while helping a loved one move into a new home, and spent several hours sitting in a squatting position, which rendered unable to walk later in the day.
The case is a shocking and unexpected one that has baffled health experts, with Dr. Thomas Kimber, study leader and neurologist from the Royal Adelaide Hospital (Australia), giving a statement saying that “We were certainly surprised and shocked. It was a surprise to us that someone could get such severe nerve and muscle damage from the activity she described. The clothing she was wearing was the critical factor”.
The realization was a sudden one for the anonymous patient as well. She shared that on her way back home, her skinny jeans felt tighter and tighter, and her feet felt numb. It caused her to fall down and left her unable to get up off the ground. She had to spend several hours lying there before someone found her and brought her to a hospital.
The medical staff treated her with intravenous fluids for four (4) days, at the end of which she still had a certain amount of weakness in her legs, even though she was able to walk out of the building. She has now recovered fully, although it remains unknown if she still wears skinny jeans.
While this was one of the more severe cases that doctors have encounter, Kimber informs that it’s not the only one. Tight jeans have been held responsible for nerve lesions in the past, especially in the groin.
He offered an explanation saying that such clothing items cause nerve damage because of their non-stretchy nature which squeezes muscles and makes them swelled inwards. The health expert informs that tight pants that have elasticity do not pose any danger.
Fortunately such an unpleasant experience is easy to avoid. Dr. Kimber suggest that you avoid wearing skinny jeans if you’re about to spend several hours squatting or kneeling. In the event that your legs start to tingle and give you any kind of an uncomfortable feeling, you should sit up immediately and move around a bit in order to get blood circulating once again.
High heels perfectly flat flip-flops are other fashionable accessory that has been known to cause health problems due to their extremes.
Wearing heels that go up more than a couple of inches causes body weight to be pushed forward, which in turn makes women lean backwards in order to compensate, but doing so puts stress on the lower spine.
Flip-flops on the other hand make wearers walk differently and can easily cause calf muscles to get overworked.
