It’s been a long war and the battle keeps going, while “Relay For Life” continues to fight against cancer in its 12th annual anniversary. It is considered the be one of the most touching events dedicated to cancer patients and cancer survivors, with money gathered to be given to foundations that strive to improve the lives of those affected.
Over 350 participants are getting ready to run or walk around the track set in Carlsbad, along with many other events to take place the entire day to support the fight against the disease. The event has seen greater popularity in the last three years, bringing in almost $40,000, dedicated to services that will improve the life of cancer patients.
With formed teams or individual participations, the event offers numerous ways to show support, be it from marathons, silent auctions, frozen t-shirt contests, face painting for children and many others along with bake sales or other foods available for purchase.
Many cancer survivors have spoken out for the event, recalling touching memories and the hope that Relay For Life has given to those in need. It’s both a fun celebration for those who have won the battle against cancer and a touching tribute for those who have unfortunately fallen to the disease.
Candles are lit and stories are told, families gather and share their tales of those who have passed and those who are still fighting. What they have in common forms their strongest bond, turning a tragic condition into an experience that can bring people closer together.
It is the hopes of participants and the American Cancer Society that through their efforts, more funds will be gathered to be sent to cancer charities around the United States. Relay For Life has been an active for around 30 years and has seen success on the shoulders of sponsors and volunteers’ hard work.
Thanks to money raised for research, cancer death rates have seen a 22% decrease within the last two decades. Breast cancer and prostate cancers alike have seen to falling by 34% and 37% respectively in death rates.
It is with the help of researchers, doctors and events like these that slow, but steady steps forward are being made each day for the fight against cancer, and why 14.5 million cancer survivors are alive today to share their stories.
