Just when times are dull, and all hope for humanity seems lost, there’s one such moment when you feel that everything is worth it. When you look at the photo where an armless toddler hugs armless pilot Jessica Cox, it’s really impossible not to shed a tear.
There really is no obstacle large enough for any human being with a will strong enough. That is exactly the case for Jessica Cox. The first pilot in the world with no arms, as well as a third-degree black belt, a skydiver, a swimmer, a cyclist, and also a perfect driver – the list of accomplishments that this woman has achieved seems to be practically endless.
Looking at what she has done, one cannot help but feel small compared to her. There literally seems like there is nothing that she couldn’t do, if she put her mind to it. The power of will that a disability bestows on one far overshadows the actually impairments that the handicap brings.
A little three year old girl, RE Pranke was completely demoralized by the fact that she was born without arms. As her mother, Karlyn Pranke, says, she had been continuously saying that she wants arms, ever since she had first started to speak. So, after a little Google-searching, Karlyn found out about Jessica Cox, the wonder woman, who had the same problem as her little RE, and decided to go ahead and arrange a meeting between the two.
After talking with her on Facebook a bit, she found out about the premiere of her movie, Right Footed, and then immediately took her little daughter for the six-hour long drive to make the 24th of July deadline.
The two met, and hugged, in a photo that has since made the news feed of probably everyone in the country, and certainly gone around the globe. As Cox puts it, it’s a powerful message that says huge amounts about overcoming disabilities as two people with no arms can share such a profound and beautiful moment as a hug. Cox says that this was a constant questions on the lips of interviewers: how does one with no arms hug?
Cox went on to show the little girl the airplane she flies, which RE had been asking about ever since they met. It was simply a beautiful and inspiring moment for little miss Pranke, as she is displaying radiating smiles in all of the photos from the event.
As her mother puts it, all the way driving home, the little girl kept saying “She’s just like me.”
