They say that once you’re in, you never truly get out and it seems to be the way for the popular franchise as gamers will be back into the mob with Mafia III, as early as next year. Ever since its first installment in 2002, the Mafia games have immersed players into the third-person shooter, gangster filled open world.
Previous games have introduced us to the fictional cities of Lost Heaven between 1930 and 1938, and Empire Bay between the late 1940s and early 1950’s era. However, things are about to change for the third installment, who has been deemed to be best looking so far.
Players will be able to say hello to Jazz music, Mardi Gras, nightclubs and voodoo magic in the realistic reflection of New Orleans, 1968, where crime runs rampart and the mob rules the city. It is the first setting of a Mafia game that will not be featured within an entirely fictional world. The fashion, the cars and even the music is authentic to the late 60’s in the most unique city in the United States.
The protagonist will also be of a different branch than previous main characters. While used to guiding an up-and-comer gangster up through the ranks, gamers will now instead be placed in the shoes of Lincoln Clay, a Vietnam War veteran who seeks revenge on the Italian mob after they betray his newfound family.
Game developer and publisher, 2k, has announced fans of the franchise that this particular chapter will immerse players even more into the gun-slinging, punch-throwing and harsh-speaking world, and their reveal of gameplay at Gamescon this year has proved them right.
Attendants were treated with a full mission of Mafia III, with the game showing off what it can and will do. The graphics were stated to be the most exceptional of the franchise yet, with vivid and authentic details of 1968 New Orleans, strong characters and an ambiance that is bound to engulf the player.
Ranging from junkies hanging out in graveyards to mob-ruled Jazz clubs, the game focuses into the very essence of the city’s dangerous underbelly and offers gamers the chance to play through in whichever way they please. The cinematic narrative will respond to the player’s choices on how they complete a mission or how they interact with others.
For example, while some might choose to sneak their way into a club to get their target, others might want to interrogate the right people and lure them out. And, of course, some could choose to burst inside guns blazing and take care of business to the violent level we’ve come to expect from the game.
The Mafia franchise has seen great success due to rich storytelling and excellently crafted gameplay, with its third installment set to reportedly outdo its predecessors. The message, as any mafia-related game or movie, is the importance of family in the most dangerous way possible. “Family isn’t who you’re born with, it’s who you die for”, as the protagonist Lincoln Clay would say.
