It’s the source of life for most people connected to the internet in their homes, but users need to pay $200 for Google’s Sleek OnHub router, which might not be the ideal price for a device that exists in much lower costs.
For the most part, users do not consider the average router as a very noticeable part of their homes, mostly because a majority of us keeps theirs tucked away beneath our desks or somewhere on a shelf. It’s not precisely a decoration, with unsightly antennas and dull coloring. However, that’s completely understandable, because it’s never valued by its aspect.
However, Google has released the OnHub router and attempts to close the gap a little bit through its more sleek design. The cylinder-shaped device might look slightly more attractive than the average flat and square products on the market. It’s to be noted that others, such as Apple, made more aesthetically pleasing devices like the AirPort Extreme Base Station.
Google does not seem to lag behind in any market, and has now taken the reins to feature their router somewhere on full display within your house. Or at the very least, make it a slight possibility. The OnHub is smoothly shaped and holds a bit of ambient lighting across its top that wouldn’t look too bad on your desk.
It’s 7.5 inch in height, 4.6 inch in diameter with a removable plastic cover.
However, the most important aspect still remains its performance, though it hasn’t proved itself to be a vast improvement from the average decently-made router. For example, the OnHub uses the 2.4GHz and the 5GHz frequency bands, and has shown no hitches in sending signal even across the street.
The router also features its own app, GoogleOn, which allows users to properly check the status of the devices connected, names and the amount of data they’re downloading or uploading. A number of nine devices were reportedly tested at the same time and came up with good results.
The OnHub also allows you to offer more bandwidth to a certain device of your preference, depending its use, but it should be noted that the capacity of your internet connection should also be taken into consideration.
The app seems to be one of its strongest suits, which gives you more control without even having to interact with the router. It can reset it, check it and tweak it with the simple use of your phone. And, more importantly for those who are the ‘tech experts’ among their family and friends, monitoring privileges can be given to someone else through the app.
That might save you a few trips for despairing friends and family who ‘mysteriously’ lost their internet connection, but it will cost $199 for the OnHub.
