Many people have regarded coconut oil as a healthier alternative to other types of cooking oil, but a recent study states otherwise. All type of oil used for cooking, be it obtained from coconut, does not reduce cardiovascular risk. These kinds of oils are still saturated fats, which have a devastating effect on our health.

Coconut oil, also known as copra oil, has many uses. It can serve as a food ingredient, apart from cooking oil, an alternative source of fuel, or as a hair treatment. Despite all its benefits, American health organizations warn people not to consume it, due to the high levels of saturated fats it contains. These fats increase the levels of both good and bad cholesterol.
Many producers present coconut oil as a healthy alternative to other commonly used oil. However, this is not the case. It contains an overwhelming 82 percent of saturated fats, as compared with butter, for example, with only 63 percent. If people really want to switch to healthier oils, they should opt for those containing unsaturated fats. These include olive, corn, sunflower, canola, or any kind of vegetable oil.
Dr. Frank Sacks, the lead author of the study, wants to make everything clear. Fats are still an important part of a person’s diet, but they shouldn’t consume them excessively. Also, people shouldn’t give up on fats completely, as they are necessary for vitamin absorption.
The best choice would be to replace saturated fats with unsaturated fats, and consistently reduce the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, opt for vegetable oil instead of butter, lard, or coconut oil.
