United States Geological Survey geologists from the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, who have been keeping a close eye upon the Puna lava flow from Apaa Street to Pahoa Village Road have stated that the tube system is still carrying lava as far down slope as the Pahoa cemetery. However the movement is very slow and sluggish.
HVO scientists have stated that most of the activities are taking place further upslope where breakouts are significantly inflating and expanding the flow. In some places the flow is reaching the heights of 18 feet and is widening to a little more than a mile.
HVO researchers observed the greatest activity further upslope, approximately 0.37 miles from Apaa Street. The bulge surged by 220 yards in between Monday and Tuesday and is moving North/North East.
Volcano Experts are keeping a close watch on the movement of the breakout since there are fears that it may follow a different path of steep descent and could possibly not reconnect with the existing leading edge downslope.
