California has developed new measures to reduce the greenhouse gasses by 40% by the end of 2030. The new standards were released soon after Donald Trump became the 45th President of the United States on January 20. This decision is bound to be the commitment of California to be the environmental custodian of the entire nation under Trump’s administration which has always questioned the existence climate change.

California officials argued that it was pure coincidence that their new plan regarding climate change was released 37 minutes before the new president’s inauguration. The state underlined that their primary goal is to cut the emission of greenhouse gasses by 40% by 2030. Many people claim that is was not unexpected for the new plans to clash with the opinions of Donald Trump regarding climate change.
This fight also included an argument related to the old authority of the state during the last decades who had the power to set the limits of emissions which are now far stricter than any other area in the US. Trump has always questioned the existence of global warming as being caused by human-made activities. Scott Pruitt, Trump’s nominee for secretary of the Environmental Protection Agency, has expressed his doubts regarding climate change and noted that EPA regulations should not impair the development of the economy.
The California measures include an extension of the controversial program known as carbon cap-and-trade requiring all the oil refineries in the state to reduce the emissions of greenhouse gasses by 20%. Mary Nichols, the chair of the California Air Resources Board, stated that climate change is currently affecting California and their sole purpose is to continue and fight against it by taking effective action when addressing it to improve and protect the quality of life in California.
She also noted that the climate change goals of California are known to be the boldest and ambitious ones in North America. On January 20, Trump’s administration has eliminated all mentions of global warming from the website of the White House, stating that they will also remove the Climate Action Plan. This plan was bound to cut emissions by preserving forests and supporting the increased use of renewable fuels.
On January 18, Pruitt claimed that the government would not allow California to establish more stringent emissions standards by using a federal waiver.
