One of the top Japanese auto safety official has acknowledged that Japan’s recall system needs an overhaul in order to respond to global problems that included explosion of Takata air bags.
The airbags company Takata has recalled over 14 million vehicles globally. The faulty airbags is the resultant of the inflators which may explode. It is reported that over five deaths and several injuries are caused because of the the faulty airbag worldwide.
Japan’s recall system is different than US. The recall is done in bits and pieces, which is scheduled at different times for each nation. The faulty parts are in large quantity across the world as the parts are standardized, which means one defect can lead to millions of vehicles recalled.
Toyota Motors announced that it is recalling 185,000 vehicles from Japan and 5,000 in China. Toyota has already recalled some vehicles in US. Honda is planning to recall some 135,000 vehicles in Japan.
“There is widespread pressure on regulators to take a more pro-active role in investigating safety risks and to be seen to take action where manufacturers are hesitant,” said Peter Shervington, an expert in product liability at Eversheds, a global law firm.
Additionally, Mazda is also recalling some 86,000 vehicles related to humidity, according to Mazda spokesperson. The humidity is one of the possible factor for the explosion, the reports say.
The recall number has nearly reached 14 million vehicles. This is huge, and is adding extra cost to the companies.
