Ubisoft Receives flak for its 12 hours embargo on the reviewers

December 2, 2014 by Jason Brusse Leave a Comment

Game developer Ubisoft has been receiving brickbats and bouquets but of late it has been receiving more brickbats. Some gamers have also stated that it is a top contender for the fabled “Worst Company in America” award in Consumerist’s annual poll. Adding to its woes, its latest iteration of the Assassin’s Creed Unity, has met with some pretty mixed reviews. Most experts have termed its content as a missed opportunity. Worse it was a case of Ubisoft’s handling of the game’s reviews than reviews of the game itself.

Ubisoft Receives flak for its 12 hours embargo on the reviewers

Ubisoft enforced a 12 hours embargo on the reviewers after the game was released. So the reviewers will not be able to talk about the game until thousands of games were bought by its fans.

Why would Ubisoft do such a thing?

Wired’s Chris Kohler writes, “Given the popularity of midnight launches and all-hours digital distribution options like Steam, that means Ubisoft deliberately held back reviews until 12 hours after people were buying it. You might imagine this meant Ubisoft anticipated poor reviews. This seems to have been the case, given the reviews thus far.”
