We’ll Have Destiny 2 In 2017

Activision confirmed that we’ll have Destiny 2 in 2017 along with a big expansion coming at some point this year. However, given that all the dates given are 2016 and 2017, it’s up to question on what exactly that means.

  • Activision confirmed Destiny 2 for 2017
  • They also announced a major expansion for Destiny in 2016
  • Spring of 2016 will also arrive with an update for the current game

Destiny fans are coming off the disappointment that was the Crimson Days event that was an in-game tribute to Valentine’s Day. The content was remote and there was not too much to be said about the rewards. The decorations were probably the biggest change, though that’s hardly enough for gamers to call it a good update. In fact, it was overall considered insignificant. Cynics might go ahead and say it’s a perfect symbol for the holiday it represented.

However, Activision has come forth with some fresh news about their popular franchise. Apparently, there will be a “huge expansion” coming later on this year for the current game. However, they did not offer details on what exactly that means. It’s a mere tease to curious fans of the game who want to know where Destiny is headed. Given that we still have ten months of 2016 left, the expansion could virtually come out at any point until December.

The release date will also be tied to the actual size. It depends on what Activision and Bungie perceives to be large. Destiny has recently switched from bigger paid DLCs to smaller free expansions. So, a “huge expansion” could virtually be anything from the size of Dark Below to the much grander Taken King. It’s easy to say which one fans of the series are actually looking for.

Furthermore, Activision confirmed that the team is working on a sequel to the popular game. In fact, the release is expected in 2017, though that in itself is, again, vague. It could be December 2017, which makes the game essentially two years away. Depending on its size, it might very well take that long to be ready. And, fans will likely be expecting something to match Destiny’s original content if it’s to gain the title of ‘sequel’. So, pressure’s on for Bungie to start working on both the expansion and the second, full game.

In the meantime, Bungie announced that there will be a spring update coming for Destiny, which will feature “significant Light increase, a bunch of new gear to earn and equip, and new challenges for PvE content”. Here’s hoping that Activision will announce more or even offer a glimpse of Destiny 2 at the E3 conference this year.
