Fans of the popular role-playing video game series Fallout have finally been treated to an official announcement of the long-awaited next installment in the series. A trailer for Fallout 4 showing in-game footage and cutscenes was released earlier this week, ending months of speculation with the confirmation that what we knew was right: Fallout 4 is set to take place in a post-apocalyptic version of Boston.
Rumors and leaks regarding the next Fallout game have originally surfaced in late 2014, when a teaser countdown site supposedly meant to reveal the game was unmasked as a fan hoax. However, the trailer did confirm some of the leaked details: besides the settings, the trailer ended with appeared to be the player character talking with his dog, making it the first time a Fallout game features a voiced protagonist.
Developer and publisher of the game Bethesda have announced nothing aside from what was show in the trailer, and is expected to feature an in-depth presentation of the game at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) conference which is going to take place between the 16th and 18th of June at the Los Angeles Convention Center. But of course, this wasn’t enough for the internet, who have dissected and analyzed every frame of the 4-minute long trailer, and even more. Here’s what we know about the post-apocalyptic role playing shooter until now:
• If the trailer provides an accurate look on the game world, then the game will take place in a post-apocalyptic version of Boston and the surrounding New England area, with landmarks such as the Bunker Hill monument or Paul Revere statue appearing in the trailer;
• The game is going to be released for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC. Though no release date has been provided yet, retailers such as Amazon or Wal-Mart and digital distribution platforms such as Steam have already made listings for pre-orders, with some of them setting probably release date placeholders on the 31st of December this year;
• In terms of gameplay and story, many of the franchise’s factions such as the Brotherhood of Steel or The Railroad will make an appearance, according to the trailer. The game’s story might play out sometime near the events of Fallout 3, as a two-year old leak from one of the voice actors stated that his character is set to return in a future game;
• The main character will probably be voiced, as we see what appears to be him speaking to a dog at the end of the trailer. This marks a first for the Fallout series.
There is also a post that has recently gone viral on Reddit in which a user claiming that he worked for Bethesda posted a detailed presentation of the game as revenge for him being fired, implying that it will be available near this year’s winter holidays. Of course, no one can verify it’s veracity; but one thing we can be sure of is that we’ll find out when and how exactly we’re going to take a trip into post-apocalyptic Massachusetts after E3.
