You’re probably tired of wiping the floor each time after your canine friend drinks water but it looks like dogs’ messy drinking is efficient after all.
- Dogs are messier than cats when drinking water
- The dogs’ drinking mechanism is actually very efficient
- You shouldn’t scold your dog for splashing water
Most people like dogs and dog owners are even ready to put their dog first. The reason behind this is quite simple – dogs are indeed man’s best friend. They offer unconditional love, which, let’s face it, rarely happens among humans. They wake you up in the morning and don’t care about your morning breath; they wait for you to come back from work and are always incredibly excited to see you. And these are only a few things of what makes us like dogs.
Despite the love we share with our canine friends, some of their habits can be annoying to us. Some of them have a true passion for shoes. Others are having trouble holding themselves until getting out of the house and some of them appreciate the fine taste of furniture. But a weird and possibly annoying habit they all have in common is the way they drink water.
Dogs eat water in a very sloppy way. They slurp and gulp it, mainly because they are not able to hold it in their mouths. They use their tongues in a very complex manner in order to take and hold the water until it reached their mouth.
Their tongue extends and makes a big splash when it touches the water as the surface of the tongue that hits the water is quite large in order to help the dog get a bigger gulp of water. The mechanism turns out to be the best way for dogs to drink more water in less time.
Cats have pretty much the same drinking mechanism as dogs, except being smaller and having smaller tongues makes them less likely to splash the water all over the floor. Besides, since the two types of animals are also different in behavior, it is only natural that they have a different way of drinking.
For example, cats are more reserved, more gracious or elegant and less likely to get overly excited. On the other hand, dogs are incredibly friendly and anxious and take everything like it’s a new great adventure – drinking water included.
All in all, don’t scold your dog for making a mess. The way they drink water it’s just another thing that makes them be dogs.
