Gamers have a pretty strained relationship with their favorite developers. And an even more strenuous one with the developers that let them down. It’s pretty common to bash generally good developers, but it’s quite uncommon for a disgraced veteran to come back into the spotlight in a positive manner, so their old fans just trash them while hoping for the best. A certain fallen star in the gaming industry went through something like that recently, as Fable’s Peter Molyneux fell victim to a Twitter prank.
- Peter Molyneux’s portfolio includes the Fable series, Dungeon Keeper, and Black and White
- He started his own studio, 22Cans, to create the most critically acclaimed games of career
- He is a very controversial figure in the world of gaming
- Peter is the recipient of a number of significant awards
- He is best known for overhyping his titles and letting down his fan base
Godus, Molyneux’s most recent title, was already met with controversy since its development, and things didn’t go so well from there.
January 28th saw the game designer as the victim of a Twitter prank. Three tweets ensued, all of them from Molyneux’s official account, which was hacked.
The first one claimed that Godus would be immediately recalled from Steam due to the unfavorable criticism it managed to gather.
The second one talked about his retirement, thanking fans and saying how he enjoyed his ventures.
The third and last one claimed that Fable III was his biggest mistake, to the delight of fans worldwide.
It didn’t last long however, as the real Molyneux issued a fourth tweet, saying that his account got hacked, that Godus is moving on as scheduled, and that he is not retiring.
Despite having received a large number of very significant awards, including honorary Doctor of Science by the University of Southampton, and the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Game Developers Choice Awards, Peter Molyneux is still a highly controversial figure, both revered and hated by gamers worldwide.
His earlier work, including Populous, Black and White, Dungeon Keeper, as well as the first two Fable games received high critical praise, and allowed him to become a huge name in the gaming industry.
He became controversial with the release of Fable 3, as it turned out that the designer had pretty much lied about what you could do in the game, claiming features that were never even meant to be part of the game.
He continued doing this with a large number of his titles, losing pretty much all credibility and becoming the subject of controversial debated with the launch of pretty much every one of his subsequent titles.
