Facebook News Feed always updates the stories on you home page. This includes photos, videos, status updates, app activities, likes and comments from groups, people and pages that you follow on Facebook. However not all these news may be of interest to us since not all our Facebook friends are closely related to us.
That is why Facebook want to adjust its News Feed algorithm in order to reduce the number of posts from pages which you liked and instead display more information about your friends. Facebook has announced that the new changes will improve the News Feed which from now on will show contents which matter more.
On Tuesday Facebook reconfigured its News Feed aiming to keep people informed about what the friends they care about do. Lauren Scissors and Max Eulenstein from Facebook said in a blog post that the goal is to offer people the content which matter to them. The updates posted by friends will appear higher up in News Feed so people won’t miss anything.
These measures will make other Facebook pages less visible to users. Taking into consideration the fact that Facebook’s purpose was to enable a better connection with other people, friends and family, this is a good change. However this may not come as good news for businesses which were built on Facebook referral traffic.
Facebook explained:
“If you like to read news or interact with posts from pages you care about, you will still see that content in News Feed. This update tries to make the balance of content the right one for each individual person.”
A significant number of users have complained that it is annoying to see the same post repeatedly every time somebody likes or comments on it. The company was considerate and made some changes about this too. In order to make room for new posts they have moved down the news regarding commentaries on other users’ posts.
These changes may have the following explanation: both pages and people have started posting more and more updates. Users gather more page subscriptions and friends, but the amount of time spend on the News Feed does not increase fast enough to keep up with the increasing volume of the content. If the company would prioritize pages over friends, people won’t check their News Feed. This is why Facebook has to make friends more important by giving them more weight in the News Feed.

Worse than ever. Now ever frigging like from friends floods your newsfeed. The first four pages was one friend’s photos/videos of things that person likes — which half were animal videos. I had to scroll through all that shit to get to something of substance. When I did, the new few pages was another friend’s likes. Facebook gets worse with each update.
