CCP Games was slated to become a pioneering company. It has already created a virtual reality version of its blockbuster ‘EVE Online.’ However, their experiments into VR games are put on hold. In the meantime, the company has to close two of its five offices and say goodbye to 100 staff members.

CCP Games Fell Victim to the Lure of New Virtual Reality Market

CCP studio shut down its Atlanta VR office while it managed to find a buyer for its second location in Newcastle, UK. The latter played a major role in developing the groundbreaking production of ‘EVE Valkyrie.’

The remaining studios are located in Reykjavik, London, and Shanghai. The company is ensuring relocation offers and severance packages to only a part of those employees laid off.

At the moment, tech behemoths all over the world are investing huge funds of billions of dollars in creating a solid virtual reality market. Samsung, Facebook, HTC, and others are already tweaking their first generation of VR headsets and growing content on these platforms.

Even though there are massive efforts in this novel industry, consumers are not ready to give up the traditional technology for an experimental one. Therefore, CCP Games is one of the many companies that learned the hard way that time has not come yet to score a profit within this young domain.

The Company Will Put VR Games on Hold While Focusing on PC and Mobile Platforms

Therefore, the environment is currently nourishing for experiments yet hasn’t tapped into the financial benefits as of yet. CCP Games CEO Hilmar Petursson announced that his company is going to put the VR department on hold of for the time being.

“We will be shifting our focus to our PC and mobile initiatives.”

The gaming firm was created in 1997 in Reykjavik, Iceland. It was only until 2003 that the company would gain recognition in its market through the title of ‘Eve Online.’

In March 2016, CCP Games launched a VR version of its flagship entitled ‘EVE Valkyrie.’ This entry was one of the first attempts to take advantage of the VR technology within gaming industry. Despite its weak financial return, the production is recognized as one of the best such products.
