There has always been a battle between Android and Apple, each one trying to get more customers by creating high-tech smartphones. India is the world’s third largest phone market, with millions of people who are willing to buy phones, but at a reasonable price. That is the main reason why India goes for Android as Apple is struggling to get more buyers.
- Indian consumers prefer to buy Android smartphones because they are cheaper.
- Apple is waiting for the market to develop.
According to data from Strategy Analytics, Apple shipped 800 000 smartphones in India, in the second quarter of this year. The number may seem huge but they managed to ship 1.2 million Iphones last year, in the same period. Indian consumers goes for Android phones because they cost less than Apple ones. The price is the main barrier Apple is facing. Their cheapest smarphone is four time more expensive than the average selling prices for Android phones.
One solution would be to create a cheaper phone, but Apple is not used to make cheap phones. Even in some countries price means quality, in India the situation could be different. There is potential for expansion and people would buy Iphones if they had a cheaper option.
There are still some Indian consumers who love Apple and buy all their new products. Apple’s overall market in India is small, but it can grow if it will be seen more strategically. The world will develop and so will do the technology so, maybe, in a few years, Indian people will be more curious to try Apple products.
Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO assured that there is no problem for them. He said that they were not there for quarters or years, they were going to be there for thousands of years. Having that in mind, we are pretty sure they will succeed anywhere in the word. Moreover, the situation Apple is struggling in India is similar to the one of the Chinese market ten years ago. Apple’s team will probably wait for the Indian market to develop and then they will come with new products, at the same price they are using in countries like England, Germany or France.
In conclusion, although the Indian market goes for Android, everything is possible in the future. We will see if Apple’s CEO predictions are true and if the development of the market will bring Apple new buyers.
