The second season of the gothic horror show ended just a few hours ago and fans are already counting down the days until season 3 starts. Between the victory over the devil, the loss of Evelyn Pool and Sembene, and all the separate paths our characters went on at the end of the hour, there is much to speculate about.
John Logan, Penny Dreadful creator, took some time to give a few interviews and answer a few burning questions for fans to digest during the hiatus.
He is very proud of how the episode was written and of what the actors have done with the script. He feels that solving the main conflict with the antagonists in the first half of the hour and then focusing on where our family of protagonists are, was a surprising move that he hopes fans have enjoyed. He stresses that how these characters feel about themselves and about each other is equally important as defeating the bad guys.
The showrunner’s favorite scenes of the season are the ones between Vanessa and the Creature. He believes that it’s his job to put actors in different, unexpected combinations that an audience can get excited about. He found these scenes riveting to watch thanks to how Eva Green and Rory Kinnear played off of each other.
Logan explained that when Vanessa refused to leave with the Creature, telling him that she didn’t want to drag him down to her level, she was very honest about the reason. She truly believes that she has crosses a line this season and is now irredeemable.
When it comes to teasing what fans can expect from season three (3), the creator says that it’s important to take a look at the strength and grace that the main group has found with one another during season two (2). They’ve developed intimate relationships and have become stronger people through those relationships.
At the beginning of next season some of them will be on their own, far away from their friends, so then the question becomes “What will be the event that will draw them back together?”.
Tumblr shipper are being given hope too, as Logan informs that not all is lost when it come to the romance between Vanessa and Ethan. He hates to think that we live in a world where there’s no hope for love, however he also shares that both characters are in a dark and desolated place that they have not been able to escape for a really long time. So keep in mind that it might not be an easy road to romance.
The showrunner also confirmed that we’ve not seen the last of Hecate. She should prove to be a fun, interesting character next season as she is her mother’s daughter when it comes to the two of them sharing a flamboyant sense of evil, however Hecate is very much a contemporary woman and is not necessarily very bound “to the old tropes of Satanism”.
And on that front, you can bet that Lucifer still has a special place in the story as well. The writer states that you just can’t get rid of the Devil as easily as Vanessa seemed to have done early into the episode.
Logan kind of offers one big scoop by saying that he will be introducing another one of the big literary characters next season, but he refuses to say who. So there you go, that’s your new obsession for the next nine (9) months. Debate it with your friends and tune in next spring to find out if you guessed right.
