The silver screen legend Catherine Deneuve has recently blasted the #MeToo movement condemning sexual harassment in Hollywood as a “witch-hunt” targeting men.
The French actress signed an open letter along with other 100 actresses, scholars, and writers, which appeared in the French newspaper Le Monde.
According to the letter, the movement is doing nothing more than pushing for a “wave of purification”.
The letter condemns rape as a crime, but men’s attempts to seduce women even when done “persistently or cack-handedly” are not crimes. The letter also underlines the difference between men’s “gentlemanly” attitudes and a “macho attack”.
The letter condemns the anti-sexual harassment movement as a witch-hunt designed to punish men and get them out of their jobs just because they “touch[ed] someone’s knee or [tried] to steal a kiss.”
#MeToo Movement Threatening Sexual Liberty
The international acclaimed author Catherine Millet also signed the letter, warning that the #MeToo movement is a threat to “sexual liberty” and promoting a “hatred of men” culture.
The letter adds that Hollywood is now turning against women since it intimidates people to speak “correctly” and blasts the women that don’t join the campaign as traitors or being complicit.
- In other words, the new ‘frenzy’ campaign does not send the male “pigs” to the abattoir as intended.
- It actually gives ammo to the enemies of sexual liberty.
The letter concedes that the human sexual instinct is hard to tame, but efforts to seduce somebody should not be confused with a sexual attack.
The controversial letter was penned at a moment when the movement is gaining traction in the United States. The campaign was joined by A-list celebrities like Nicole Kidman, Eva Longoria, and Reese Witherspoon.
The movement’s goal is to fight off sexual harassment and inequality in Hollywood and at other types of workplace.
