Edena Hines, granddaughter of renowned actor Morgan Freeman, was found stabbed to death this past Sunday.
The New York City police departed responded to a distress call around 3 a.m., however Ms. Hines was already dead when help arrived. She was murdered in front of her Washington Heights apartment, at the age of 33. Police officials gave a statement informing that she had 16 stab wounds on her body.
They carried her body to Harlem Hospital where the coroner pronounced her dead, and her family was informant of the tragedy.
Morgan Freeman offered a statement to the Washington Post saying that “The world will never know her artistry and talent, and how much she had to offer”. He went on to add that her family members and her friends were lucky enough to have known her and that “her star will continue to shine bright in our hearts, thoughts and prayers. May she rest in peace”.
The main suspect in the murder is her boyfriend, a 30 year old aspiring rapper by the name of Lamar Davenport. Police officers found him standing over the victim’s body, shouting out exorcism incantations and Bible verses. They took him into custody and asked an ambulance driver to take him to Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center to undergo a psychological evaluation.
Mr. Davenport is currently facing second-degree murder charges, and witnesses have already spoken against him.
George Hudacko, a 65 year old witness, gave a statement to the New York Daily News declaring that he heard Mr. Davenport say something along the lines of: “Get out devils! I cast you out Devils in the name of Jesus Christ! I cast you out!”.
And Patrick Curry, another witness, gave a statement claiming that he saw the suspect stab the victim. He said that Mr. Davenport “was kneeling over her and screaming about ‘God has arisen’. He was totally off the ranch”.
Ms. Hines was an actress herself. She had just returned back home from Memphis so that she could shoot an independent movie titled “Landing Up”. The project was filmed in Bushwick, Brooklyn, and gave Morgan Freeman’s granddaughter great hope for the future.
This past July, she wrote a post on her blog announcing that her dream “has come true and it’s just beginning”. She also mentioned that the road hasn’t been easy for her, a statement that many people can relate to. She stressed that while life may make us want to walk away or give up, sometimes it also gives us the strength we need to appreciate our happy endings when we finally get them.
Stacey Maltin, 30 year old screenwriter of Landing Up and fellow actress, gave a statement of her own expressing shock and grief at the sad news. She described Ms. Hines as being very talented, very genuine, and offering raw emotion in the moment of filming.
