The widely-popular food group Nestle has announced that it will reduce sugar in several confectionery products by roughly forty percent.
The officials also say that these products won’t lose their taste. Nestle dominates the packaged food market as it is also the maker of Aero and Kit Kat bars. Stefan Catsicas, the Nestle’s Chief Technology Officer, said that his team discovered a revolutionary method to use sugar.
- The company’s researchers modified the composition of sugar particles by using just natural ingredients.
- More precisely, the sugar crystals will be hollowed, so they will become easier to dissolve. Therefore, Nestle chocolate will be manufactured with less sugar.
- This type of sugar will be introduced in the company’s products starting from 2018.
The researchers say that they need to test this sugar on other confectionary products until they are ready to send it on the market as well. Because obesity has taken its toll on many people across the world, the public health experts have raised awareness among food manufacturers requesting them to produce healthier products.
Over the past few years, Nestle scientists have been focusing on reducing salt, fat, and sugar from various products to make sure that consumers benefit from healthier options. It is worth mentioning that besides Nestle, other companies have tried to develop sugar and salt substitutes.
PepsiCo had such an initiative in 2010 when it introduced a salt molecule that would reduce sodium in several products including Cheetos and Walker crisps without affecting their taste. Also, other large companies used sugar substitutes to reduce the sugar in sodas, but recent research has shown that some of these substitutes might have the opposite effect.
More precisely, they can increase the risk of weight gain among consumers. Obesity is one of the major factors influencing the development of cardiovascular conditions and type 2 diabetes. The problem is that diabetes can trigger Alzheimer’s disease later in life, a degenerative brain condition, also known as type 3 diabetes.
That is why scientists recommend people to improve their lifestyle with physical exercises and healthier dietary habits. Nestle is one of the companies which participates in this international campaign by manufacturing healthier products for its consumers.
