A suburban St. Louis police officer has shot and killed a man who reportedly pointed a gun at him at a gas station.
Brawls and hot words were exchanged between police officers and a highly vocal crowd of a few hundred people who surrounded the officer and were hurling rebukes at the officers in the scene. Police have till now not released any details of an arrest. The St. Louis County police chief was expected to speak about the episode in Berkeley on Wednesday morning. The place where the shooting occurred is on a few miles from Ferguson where a white police officer fatally shot black 18 year old Michael Brown. No details about the identification or the ethnicity of the police officer and the victim have been given.
A statement from the St. Louis County police spokesman Sgt. Brian Schellman said that a Berkeley police officer was conducting a routine check at the Mobil gas station at 6800 North Hanley, around 11:15 p.m. Tuesday when he approached two men. One of the men pulled out a shot gun and pointed it at the office. He responded by firing several shots killing the man. His accomplice fled the scene. The dead man’s handgun has been recovered.
No further details of the incident are available and the St. Louis County Police Department is in the process of investigating the incident.
Authorities did not identify the fallen man immediately. However the St. Louis Post-Dispatch has reported that a woman, Toni Martin, said the fallen man was her son, 18 year old Antonio Martin.
Protestors started gathering around early Wednesday. They gathered around gas stations and some were hurling expletives at the police. Most wore yellow police line tape around their nexck while some used it as a head band.
